TPSA Launches IPTV Platform The incumbent Polish telco TPSA has launched its long-awaited IPTV service. Known as videostrada tp, it is available in Warsaw and environs and is the first in Central and Eastern Europe to employ MPEG-4 compression. Its offer includes Cyfra+ DSL, described as complementary to the Cyfra+ DTH service and consisting of four programme packages, HBO and Canal+; all TVP and several TVN-branded channels; and the interactive channels 4fun.TV and ITV. There are also three foreign channels offered (Deutsche Welle, Euronews and TV5 Europe), and the service can be received for as little as PLN9.57 (€2.36) a month – PLN37.57 a month, including Cyfra+ DSL – by subscribers to TPSA’s Neostrada ADSL broadband service who already own a TP livebox modem. Polish VOD Venture Poland’s leading independent production company ATM Group and Monolith Films have agreed to create a new company that will distribute high quality VOD content to the Polish market. Earlier this month Wroclaw-based ATM Group announced that it plans to invest up to PLN47.8 million (€12.36 million) in 2006 on various projects including an IPTV service it is currently developing with Telefonia Dialog, Poland’s largest alternative telco. The service, which is expected to make its debut later this year, will be operated by Tele Video Media, a 51/49 joint venture between ATM Grupa and Telefonia Dialog and compete with one shortly to be launched by the France Telecom-backed incumbent TPSA. |
Poland’s National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) has granted the public broadcaster TVP licences for two more thematic channels. To be known as TVP Sport and TVP Rozrywka, they will now need the approval of the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) but could make their debuts as soon as this September. The channels, which will be encoded and distributed by Astra, are likely to be eventually joined by at least four more services – TVP Dokument, TVP Film, TV Parlament and the recently announced TVP Bialorus (Belarus). TVP launched TVP Kultura, its first thematic channel, in spring last year. |
